Foods Aren't Dichotomous

Diet culture is the pits, ya’ll.

We are constantly fed bullshit about “good and bad” and “clean and dirty” foods. Rather than encouraging people to nourish themselves, diet culture tells us to go paleo, keto, Atkins, Weight Watchers, or some other ridiculous and restrictive plan. But foods aren't one or the other, they are so much more complex than that. Believing otherwise is a disservice to ourselves.

I spent nearly 30 years buying into this crap. I’m not doing it anymore and I hope you won’t either.

Your body is YOURS.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to change your body. Just make sure you do it for you and no one else.

If you want to feel, sleep, or perform better, reach health and fitness goals, or succeed in some other way as it relates to what you put in your body, do it! I am totally here for people taking control of their lives and sticking a middle finger up to anyone who tries to tell them what to do with their body.

There are ways to achieve your goals without having to give into diet culture, without having to place moral imperatives on something you literally can’t live without.

Foods are not dichotomous.

Foods are not either good or bad, clean or dirty, prize or punishment. They are nourishment, satiety, fuel, and so much more.

I won’t lie to you; some foods are more nutrient-dense than others. For instance, leafy greens will provide more vitamins and minerals than a doughnut but this shouldn’t place any superiority on the greens. Both serve a purpose. Both can (and should) be consumed without guilt, shame, or remorse.

Balance is the real MVP.

If you want to improve your overall health, I definitely recommend eating a wide variety of nutrient-dense foods AND throwing in a doughnut (or ice cream or pizza or cookies or whatever you’re into) every once in a while. Not only does that shit taste good, it’s good for your mental game too. So, if you’re into those things, incorporate them into your life!

We don’t have to blacklist entire food groups, resist our favorite snacks, go on cleanses, or starve to be healthy, feel good, or nourish ourselves. Any messages to the contrary are straight up bullshit. Balance your diet, balance your mind, and tell diet culture to kick rocks.
